The idea for this hat was born in the Kalmar Union comment section: We asked for ideas for merch for our pan-Nordic roller derby national team, and had just gotten the cutest and quirkiest mascot in our new logo.

Could we make a hat like the Thingy? Sure, Princess said, having never produced a knitting pattern before in her life. The first hat was made and tried, pattern adjusted and tested, and here we are: A pattern for a spiky hat with a wonky star, to be made in the colours of your favourite team if you like roller derby. No relationship to the sport? Feel free to make your adjustments, maybe you don’t even need the star? It’s sewn on after and easy to skip.

Just like roller derby is for everyone, we want this hat to be. For now it comes in four sizes:

• S is 50 cm in diameter, and requires about 70 g yarn
• M is 60 cm, and requires about 75 g yarn
• L is 70 cm, and requires about 85 g yarn
• XL is 80 cm, and requires about 105 g yarn

The fit can be adapted additionally by how much you felt and stretch it. Don’t want to felt at all? Just soak and dry flat.

The Thingy sauna hat feels just just as at home on a hike on a cold winter day or as a layer of comfort in a chilly sports hall, as in a Finnish sauna.

The hat is knitted in Alafosslopi or another pure wool bulky yarn of choice, on 8 mm needles, or what you need for 10 stitches on 10 cm.
