Theda Shawl
THEDA SHAWL
Theda was a 15th century East Frisian Countess and a real girl boss if you ask me. After her grandfather lost the reign over East Frisia for their family, Theda made the ultimate move to marry the current Count Ulrich I, thus establishing herself as the new Countess. She continued to reign after her husband’s death, until her children were old enough to take over.
History lessons aside, I developed this shawl as an exclusive design for the Strickträume Leer Knitting Retreat in October 2026. The main body is worked in an easy-to-remember Half Linen Stitch, leaving enough mental space for you to chat while you knit - very important at a retreat! The simple lace brings a bit of interest without being too lace-y. Add to it a windswept shape and a back that resembles mermaid scales, Theda is a nice little shawl project to remind you of a trip to the seaside.
The pattern includes instructions for the single-colour version as well as instructions for the two-colour version.
Size
About 157 cm × 30 cm / 62 in × 12 in (wingspan × height)
Yarn
The light sample shawl is worked in Pink Queen Yarns Zola in colourway Ice Ice Baby. The dark sample shawl is worked in Strickwerk34 Yak-Liebe Lace Single held double in a dark stormy blue, with Pink Queen Yarns Zola in Ice Ice Baby as accent colour. Other yarns in the fingering weight range (or lace weight held double) with a similar fibre composition work fine as well.
Gauge and Needles
28 sts × 50 rows = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4 in, worked flat in
Half Linen Stitch, after washing, on 3.25 mm (US 3) needles.
The pattern is entirely written, no charts whatsoever. All measurements in the English pattern are given in metric and imperial. The German version has metrial measurements only. The pattern is available in English and German.
