This top down hat uses 6 size 10-10.5 DPN needles. No ribbing is needed. It can be done with 5 needles in a pinch (see pic of flat hat), but I prefer the look of the 6 needle hat.

The bobble at the top is part of the original design but optional. I make the hat long enough that the brim can be rolled down to cover the eyes and be used as a ‘sleep’ hat.

For a fancier hat, eyelash yarn can be knit in together with the base color.

Skeins: one super bulky and optionally 3/4 skein eyelash yarn. A very large hat may take slightly more than one skein of super bulky yarn.

My belief is that a proper Mongol style hat should be able to stand up and walk all on its own. Therefore the stiffness of the fabric is intentional. The photo of the hat with the eyelash yarn shows the hat standing up proudly by itself. Actual walking might take a bit more doing…

This is a fairly quick project. I can generally finish a hat in 2 evenings.
