Have fun playing with colour combos and plump, soft yarn, to create hats that everyone is keen to wear.

The pattern includes a couple of simple Thinking Cap variations, both using just two colours of yarn, so you can easily create quite different Thinking Caps with the same two colours. Add a pom-pom to make your Thinking Cap even more unique.

Including charted and written instructions, Thinking Cap is a simple colourwork knit that’ll fly off your needles.

SIZES
To fit head sizes Small (Medium, Large) 18-20 (21-22, 23-24)”/45.5-51 (53.5-56, 58.5-61) cm.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Brim circumference 17.5 (19, 21)”/43 (48, 53.5) cm, blocked and unstretched.
Length from base of brim to centre of crown 7.5 (8.5, 8.5)”/19 (21.5, 21.5) cm.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
Size US 5/3.75 mm & US 7/4.5 mm 16”/40cm circular needles and size US 7/4.5 mm preferred needles for knitting small circumferences, 1 stitch marker, wool needle.

GAUGE
22 sts x 28 rnds = 4”/10 cm in colourwork after blocking, with US 7/4.5 mm needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge.

YARN & MATERIALS
Both hats use 2 balls of Zealana Heron (80% fine New Zealand Merino/20% brushtail possum; approx 109 yds/100 m per 50g ball); 1 ball in each colour.

If substituting yarn, you’ll need plump DK/ worsted-weight yarn in 2 colours for either the Brainiac or Dreamer hats, as follows:

BRAINIAC (PINK/MUSTARD)
Colour A (pink; H07 Carnival) approx. 92 (105, 109) yds/84 (96, 100) m, Colour B (mustard; H12 Honey) approx. 48 (70, 81) yds/44 (64, 74) m.

DREAMER (BROWN/BLUE)
Colour A (brown; H08 Raisin) approx. 44 (87, 109) yds/40 (80, 100) m, Colour B (blue; H02 Bottle Green) 33 (54.5, 65.5) yds/30 (50, 60) m.
