Thumbelina's Bloom
This floral pincushion is worked in overlay crochet and designed for adventurous advanced beginners or intermediate crocheters.
It’s named after the tiny, resilient flower girl from Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, “Tommelise” (1835). Thumbelina’s delicate world is what came to mind when I looked at the finished design for the first time. I hadn’t planned it that way—it simply emerged through the creative process.
I like the idea of this design being a reminder that small things can carry meaning—and sometimes have more impact than we expect.—whether in stories, in life, or in the quiet beauty of handmade work.
Project Info
This is a relatively quick make It’s also a great way to use up yarn scraps, as each round requires only a small amount of yarn.
The pincushion features a firm, slightly concave base so it sits securely, and the layered flower motif adds visual texture. The mix of colors makes it look cute with both unicolor and multicolored pins.
Stitches & Techniques (US terms):
ch, sc, hdc, dc, fpdc, extfpdc, sp, ss, sk, st(s), blo, nxt, MR (magic ring).
Includes seamless and invisible joins.
Instructions
The pattern is written in full (US crochet terms) and includes step-by-step photos. Experience with post stitches (like front post double crochet) is an advantage, as they are used throughout the design.
“She was small and delicate, but there was courage in her heart, and a longing for light, freedom, and flowers”. (H.C.Andersen)
