Tilburg Cowl
This pattern is available only through the Indie Untangled Where We Knit Yarn Club until November 2025, when it will be made available here on Ravelry. Please note: this is a secret design so the current cover photo was the inspiration for the design! =]
Tilburg is a single-wrap tube cowl with contrasting yarn weaving its way up against a wall of stockinette stitch, like ivy up a brick tower. As you knit the stockinette stitch with MC, the bobbin of CC darts back and forth from right side to wrong side of your work.
The cowl is knit in the round using the purl inlay method and is grafted to finish with a Möbius twist. This gives it some volume so it sits just right when you throw it on completing your look with a bold, graphic piece that pairs well with layers, perfect for those in between seasons.
This cowl was designed for the Indie Untangled ‘Where We Knit’ 2025 Club along with three other designer/dyer pairs releasing exclusive accessory patterns and yarns quarterly. This design was created together with Sea Change Fibers inspired by weaving by the water at sunset.
SIZES
* One size: Finished cowl is 28.5”/ 72cm in circumference and 5.25” / 13.5cm high
CONSTRUCTION
Knit in the round, Tilburg uses the purl inlay method. The MC is knit in Stockinette Stitch while the CC jumps between the right and wrong sides, trapped between the stitches and never actually being knit into the fabric.
The cowl begins with one of two provisional cast-on methods. The body is knit using charted instructions with either a bobbin of CC or holding MC and CC in both hands, stranded colorwork style. Once the body is finished, the provisional cast-on stitches are picked up and both sets of stitches are grafted together with a Möbius twist.
YARN
DK-weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors. Non-superwash yarn is recommended so the purl inlay stays in place.
Required yardage:
MC (stockinette): 265 yd/ 242m
CC: 106 yd / 97m
Sample knit with Sea Change Fibers ‘Ravine DK’ (100% Cormo; 265 yd / 242m per 3.5 oz/ 100g) in exclusive colorways. The MC is the dark blue in the background and the CC is the gradient pink and light blue purl inlay.
NEEDLES
Two sets of small diameter needles (DPNs, magic loop, circular) - one for knitting the pattern and the other to pick up provisional stitches for grafting.
Recommended size: US 6 / 4 mm (or
size needed to obtain gauge with Chart pattern)
GAUGE
20 sts x 28 rnds per 4” / 10 cm in
Chart A (See Page 5), after blocking.
It is crucial to make a swatch of the pattern in Chart A as the CC will significantly pull your stockinette fabric in and affect gauge.
