Inspired by Iznik tiles, these multi-coloured socks are worked in a mixture of slip stitch and mosaic patterns. They look complicated, but they’re not - you’re never working with more than one colour at a time!

The design includes:

  • Slipped stitch patterns
  • Stocking stitch mosaic pattern
  • Garter stitch mosaic pattern
  • Garter stitch short-row heel
  • Four-point, star toe
  • Photo tutorials on two types of provisional cast on
  • Photo tutorial on how to knit mosaics
  • M1/backward cast-on photo tutorial
  • Suspended cast-off photo tutorial
  • Socks are worked from the cuff down, in the round
  • Directions are written for one circular needle but can be worked on two circulars or double-pointed needles as preferred
  • Charted patterns
  • 13 page pattern (includes 4 pages of tutorials)

Test knitting during lockdown 2021:
Thanks to COVID, nearly all of the test knitting was done using colours other than the ones I used for the design. When I came up with the design, I only had enough yarn in the right colours to make one pair of socks - which were, of course, needed for pattern photos. And they had to be made to fit the “lockdown sock model”, my husband. But the pattern had six sizes that needed to be tested. It took five months to get a delivery of WM yarn from Germany to me in Australia in 2021, so my test knitters and I used WM yarn I had in stash for test knitting this design. There’s a rainbow of Tiles socks out there!
