This scarf was designed for my mother-in-law. Her style is practical, chic and never flashy. I matched that with a reversible scarf that has textural interest without frills or color-work.

The scarf is knitted on the bias, increasing and decreasing in the garter stitch borders. It features reversible cables and the herringbone stitch.

Skills required: knit, purl, long-tail cast on, knit front and back, knit-2-together, cabling, binding off, optional herringbone stitch (described in pattern).

Dimensions: 23cm (9 in) by 170 cm (67 in)

Gauge: in stockinette, 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm (4 in)

Gauge is not important for this project, but a different gauge will result in different final dimensions and yarn requirement.

Needles: 4mm needles (US size 6), straight or circular

Yarn: SMC select extra soft merino 100% merino (or similar DK yarn); 50g/130m (1.76 oz/142 yd). Need 4 balls.

Notions: Cable needle, 6 (or more) stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
