Tim Shawl Collared Jacket
This is an updated version of a shawl collar jacket I first designed back in 2010 in Mirasol Book 13. The original didn’t have buttonholes. So if you prefer to knit this jacket closer to the original then omit the buttonhole row in this pattern.
This one is knitted in aran weight yarn, worked in pieces from the bottom up. The seams are straight and simple to finish with mattress stitch.
I originally designed the Tim Shawl Collared Jacket for men but it suits every shape – it’s one of those go-to pieces that works for everyone. Perfect for those days when the weather can’t make up its mind (hello, British summer!), this jacket is great for layering and helps regulate your temperature when knitted in wool.
CONSTRUCTION
The back, left and right fronts, two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in seperate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop. The neck and buttonbands edge are picked up.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, simple cable, decreasing at neck shaping, increasing on the sleeves, pockets, buttonholes, cast off. Joining seams. Sewing on buttons. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.
YARN
8(9:10:11) 100g hanks of WYS Croft Shetland Aran
100% Shetland wool, 166m/182yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
5mm.
NOTIONS
4(4:4:5) buttons.
GAUGE (tension)
17 stitches and 25 rows to 10cm/4ins square over stocking stitch using 5mm needles. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 4-11ins/10-28cm at the chest.
