Pattern description: Inspired by the Rocky Mountain environment, the Timber Hat features peaks and valleys, far reaching tree trunks and a star-studded night sky. Intended to complement my Wooded Sweater pattern, this hat is a warm and stylish companion for cool nights, campside, roasting marshmallows under the constellations.

Construction notes: The Timber Hat has 4 main design features. Starting at the CO edge, a 2x2 ribbed brim with cabled, slipped stitches creating peaks in the rib that are then echoed in a color change for the body of the hat. A double slipped stitch rib is worked at each peak around and stretches up to the crown. At the crown, a 6 pointed star is made with a cabled, slipped stitch outline and seed stitch background.

Sizing: 1-3 with 19(21,23)in, 48(53,61)cm head circumference.

In order to keep the stitch pattern consistent with the design between sizes, sts/in gauge is different for each size. Achieving this can be done easily by changing your combination of yarn weight and needle size. This pattern is a great way to use up partial skeins and yarn leftovers from other projects, as gauge can be reached with several yarn weight/needle combinations for each size - recommendations are given below. I suggest knitting a swatch to ensure a good fit.

Finished hat measurements: 17(19,21)in, 43(48,53)cm circumference, intended to be worn with approx. 2” negative ease.

Gauge, yarn and needle selection by size:
Size 1: 5.5 sts/in - Sport weight, size US4-5 needles
Size 2: 5 sts/in - DK weight, size US5-6 needles
Size 3: 4.5 sts/in - Worsted weight, size US6-7 needles.

These yarn and needle pairings are just a suggestion, as it is very possible to achieve gauge with a different yarn weight/needle combination than what is listed above. Row gauge is not specified as you will be measuring the hat depth as you knit to get a perfect fit for the head you’re knitting for.
