The lacey, open cross work of these mitts was specifically designed to highlight the wonderful pearly, effervescent characteristics of Thwayya, a natural hand dyed Teeswater wool sport weight yarn from Pindrop Fibers.

The Teeswater sheep is an endangerd species, known for its strong, lustrous curly locked fleece.

The gently flowing crisp lines of the design are perfect when paired with the strong, dense twist of the Thwayya yarn. In addition, Thwayya is easy to block and holds the open crossed pattern very well.

Each mitt is worked flat in rows then seamed to form a closed shape with an opening for the thumb.

Finished Adult Sizes:

  • Small (about 7” circumference, 8” long)
  • Medium (about 8 ½” circumference, 8” long),
  • Large (about 9 ¼” circumference, 9 ¼” long)

Recommended needles: #2 STRAIGHT needles. In order to create the crosses, you’ll need to create multiple yarn wraps every 4th row. In my opinion, these extra wraps don’t travel well across the connecting cords on circular needles…. for this reason, I use long, straight needles when working with multiple wraps.

The stitch pattern used for these mitts is a variation of the Indian Cross stitch. This pattern contains links to videos demonstrating how to create the extended loops, the left crosses, and the right crosses.
