TOP-DOWN BABY HAT
(a pattern to make a hat to match the “stay-on booties”)

MATERIALS:
• Fine soft wool, suitable for the little one
• Set of 5 Double-Pointed Needles (DPNs) suitable for the wool
you’ve chosen
• One medium-sized blunt sewing needle for the “sewn casting off”
• One medium-sized sharp sewing needle to work in the ends

GAUGE:
If you knit this hat to match the Stay-On Booties (see my store for the FREE pattern), relax the knitting for the hat. While the booties should be firmly knit, the hat needs to have some drape. Sometimes I double sock wool for the booties. Then, knitting with the same needles, I use one strand of the same wool for the hat.

Here is plan to knit a hat for a baby. Understand the set-up, and you can design a hat for anybody – that is, any head! The first hat is for a little baby, so you’ll knit it in the round entirely on double-pointed needles (DPNs). But it’s no fun to start a hat with fine wool, casting on all the stitches at once on DPNs. So we’ll start at the top, with a 4-stitch I-cord.
