Last year, I published a crocheted mitten pattern. This pattern is a simplified version of that one, worked in thicker yarn (DK or light worsted). These mittens work up quickly and are both comfortable and practical to wear. Unlike the Classic Crocheted Mittens, these Top-Down Mittens are not specific to left or right hands. You just make two of the same mitten.

I’ve included four sizes–small child, large child, women’s, and men’s–and the sizes tend a little on the big size. While the instructions use a gauge of 4 stitches per inch, you can fine tune the sizes by varying your gauge. When worked in the given gauge, the hand circumferences for each size are 6(7, 8, 9) inches around.
