The inspiration of Top of the Meadow came from the television series Outlander. In season 1 episode 2 Castle Leoch, Claire missed breakfast (congealed porridge) and went to change Jamie’s bandages at the top of the meadow wearing a pair of wrist warmers of a similar design.

As an Outlander fan, in celebration of the premiere of season 6, I’ve decided to re-publish my second ever knitting pattern now on Ravelry, written over seven years ago, together with another wrist Warmer, Ready for the Laird, back when Outlander first season was aired.

Top of the Meadow is a cable wrist warmer constructed in three parts: braided cable band, sleeve, and i-cord BO. First, a braided cable band with i-cord selvedges is knitted flat, form into a band with 3-needle bind-off; stitches are picked up from one i-cord selvedge to establish the sleeve, which is to be knitted in the round and finished with i-cord bind-off. One skein of the yarn called for in the pattern can be used up for there’s no cutting the yarn throughout the knitting process until the very last stitch.

The wrist warmer is best showcased pairing with a jacket or coat, half or 2/3 sleeved sweaters are also good.

For a shorter or longer band to fit a smaller or larger palm circumference, simply work less or more repeats on the braided cable band.

Blown yarns are particularly suitable for this project, if you want a smaller circumference, choose a thinner blown yarn and use needles one size smaller.

Besides Isager Alpaca 3, Lana Grossa Alta Moda Alpaca was the yarn I used when I first wrote up this pattern, the fabric is slightly softer than Isager Alapca 3. Ilimani Amelie can also be used, grafting the braided cable band is suggested rather than 3-needle bind-off for aesthetic reason.
