Knit a splash of rainforest magic with this bold Toucan Square Knitting Pattern! Inspired by the colorful world of tropical birds like the toucan, fruit-eater, and hornbill, this vivid design bursts with exotic charm — from its oversized beak to its rainbow feathers. Worked flat with a tidy garter stitch border framing the smooth stockinette center, this cheerful square is perfect for jungle-themed baby blankets, kids’ pillows, wall hangings, or even as a vibrant motif on an oversized sweater or a roomy market tote.

The pattern includes a detailed colorwork chart and clear row-by-row instructions, so you can knit the design using intarsia or add it afterward with duplicate stitch. It’s also suitable for machine knitting, giving you the freedom to bring your tropical bird to life your way!

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
The final size of the project will depend on the yarn and needle size you choose. Here are examples for three different yarn weights:
Sport weight (5 ply) with 3.5 mm (US 4) needles:
37 × 37 cm (15″ × 15″) — approx. 120 g
DK (8 ply) or worsted weight (8 ply) with 3.75 mm - 4 mm (US 5-7) needles (sample shown): 46 × 46 cm (18″ × 18″) — approx. 140–180 g
Aran weight (10 ply) with 5.5 mm (US 9) needles:
52 × 52 cm (20″ × 20″) — approx. 250 g

MATERIALS NEEDED
I used DK weight (8 ply) yarn — 140 g of YarnArt Creative, 100% cotton, 50 g ≈ 85 m / 1.8 oz ≈ 93 yds
Knitting needles: 3.75 mm (US 5)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
If you want to match the sample size, use DK yarn with a similar gauge. However, you’re free to use any yarn you like! This project is highly adaptable — just choose suitable needles for your yarn and enjoy the process.
