Winter is the best time for exploring the Cape mountains – they can either be moody and dramatic; or brilliantly defined in bright sunshine. The Tranquillity Cracks Shawl is inspired by and named after a hike on Table Mountain, set in Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town.

Tranquillity Cracks is a labyrinthine system of ancient, weathered rocky corridors. There is a beautiful and ageless sense of tranquillity that permeates the deep rock fissures in the rock formations above Camp’s Bay. These are dotted with gnarled yellowwood trees, weathered by the same elements that have shaped the cracks. The passages offer great little vistas and views of the surrounding areas; and is best shared with friends, some freshly baked croissants and strong, dark coffee brewed in the mocha pot.

Dropped stitches create calculated fissures in this easy to knit shawl. Combine a solid and your favourite speckled yarn for a meditative knitted piece which gradually shapes into an asymmetric shawl with endless draping possibilities. Work it in soft neutrals, or add an unexpected pop of colour for fiery contrast.
