The Tree of Peace is knit with cables for the trunk and twisted stitches for the canopy of the tree. I knit the tree twice, then stitched them together with right sides facing out. At this point the buttons are sewn on one side only. I chose some favorite buttons I had in my collection including many antique buttons, as well as a beautiful antique ring that is carved from bone as a hanger. I will hang mine all year round in my fairy room, but it can also be considered a decoration for the Christmas season. The buttons you choose will make yours unique for you. The Iroquois Tree of Peace finds its roots in a man named Dekanawida, the Peacemaker. Over 1,000 years ago the Five Nations, which consisted of the Mowhawks, Oneidas, Onandagas, Cayugas, and Senecas, were brought together in peace at Onondaga Lake by the Peacemaker and Hiawatha (Hayenhwátha). Together they planted the Great Tree of Peace (Skaęhetsiˀkona) and created the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The Tree of Peace became a symbol for the unity. I placed a carved antique button in the shape of a gun at the base of the tree to symbolize the laying down of arms.
