Any yarn matching the gauge. The cardigan should have a certain solidity to emphasize the character of a jacket. I would recommend to knit rather tightly and not to use a very smooth yarn.

Circulars 80-100cm, 4mm (US6) or size to get gauge, thinner needle (2-3mm) to pick up stitches
5 buttons, sewing needle, scrap yarn or stitch holder
