Inspired by quilted jackets and fleece pullovers, Fiona Alice designed this knitted jacket to combine the comfort of outerwear with richly textured stitchwork. A simple double moss stitch was chosen to create a fabric with depth and character, while three strands held together throughout the body produce a soft, faux-shearling effect. Contrasting i-cord trims around the pockets echo the bias binding traditionally used to finish quilted garments, adding a subtle nod to the design’s inspiration.

NOTES
This moss stitch jacket is knitted from the bottom up. The two fronts and the back are started separately. Each piece is shaped with short rows and decreases to give the side openings a curved edge. The pieces are then joined together and worked together until the underarms are reached. The two fronts and back are finished separately while armhole shaping and neck shaping is worked. The shoulders are then seamed together using the 3-Needle Bind-Off method.

Next, stitches for the sleeve are picked up around the armhole opening. The sleeve cap is worked first with a series of short rows before the rest of the sleeve is worked in the round. The sleeves are finished with a few rows of 2 x 2 Rib. Stitches are picked up along each front for the button band. Then the same is then done around the neck for the collar. 2 x 2 Rib is also used for the button bands and collar.  With the body of the jacket complete, the pockets and i-cord trim are knit separately. The pockets are positioned on the front of the jacket and stitched into place. The i-cord trim is then laid around the pocket edge and stitched in place. Buttons are then sewn in place along the button band.
