I needed a trivet where the heat from hot dishes would not go through to my plastic tablecloth which covers my crochet tablecloth because then I didn’t like the resulting condensation. I discovered some leftover ceramic tiles from a kitchen renovation and started thinking! This is the result.

I wanted a trivet where the ceramic tile inside would not be able to move, hence these instructions. Like all patterns, this is a GUIDE only: use what works for you, discard/ change what you don’t like. Because gauge is so very individual, some may have to add or subtract a couple stitches. There could very easily be a difference also due to the size of tile being used. I think the key is tightness. Due to its function, I didn’t think lacey stitches would be appropriate, but that’s an individual preference. If your inner tile is really pretty and you want to show it off, then by all means insert a few chains!

I like to use one solid colour and one complementary variegated colour; two identical solid colours are fine, as are two variegated colours. There’s no right combination!

The bobbles and loops are to make the trivet removable and washable; the very first one I made, I closed up the side, which is a lot less practical for something that’s going to be around food. However, it’s all a matter a personal preference.
