Notes From the Designer:

To honor the Fijian side of my family, I chose to name this beautiful pattern Tubucake (Too-boo-thah-k), which is the Fijian word for ‘growth.’ We all have times in our life when we have a choice to grow or stay put. This beautiful design was my growth, and it’s one you can make your own just by the way the hexagons and colors are placed. This crochet motif design, which uses a double crochet in the round, starts with one hexagon at a time. You will find that this design is a joy to make, as one color grows into the next and is enveloped with a beautiful lace border with delicate beading.

  • Click here to watch a tutorial on how to make the hexagons and how to complete the seaming.
  • The original pattern was made with a total of 109 hexagons and half hexagons. Total of 97 hexagons: Color A) 22, B) 20, C) 19, D) 20, and E) 16. Total of 12 half hexagons: Color A) 2, B) 2, C) 4, D) 2, and E) 2. Border was worked in Color F.
  • The updated version is made with a total of 97 full hexagons and 16 half hexagons: Color A) 19 full, 4 half; B) 20 full, 2 half; C) 19 full 4 half; D) 20 full, 2 half; and E) 19 full, 4 half. Border is worked in Color F.
  • In this pattern, I am introducing a new way to make the basic hexagon. This is most likely different than the one most people know. If you choose, you can use your preferred method of making the hexagons.
  • For best results, block your hexagons before sewing them together. Each side of the hexagon is blocked to 2.5”.
  • Gauge is important, as it will change the size of your hexagons, thus changing the size of your project. I tend to crochet on the looser side, so you may need to adjust the size of your hook to give you the gauge shown.
