Tunisian Spirals
This Tunisian simple stitch oval placemat is worked in short rows. This simple technique creates triangular wedges which are worked sequentially, joined as-you-go, with a short seam to sew at the end. Changing colours after each row is easy and does not generate a million ends to sew in - both colours are carried at the back of the work. You need a 6mm Tunisian hook that can accommodate 25 stitches - most hooks are long enough so a corded one is not required. I use a 5mm regular crochet hook for the border but it is optional (2nd photo shows without border, blue and pink project). I use Shiny Happy Cotton by Wool and the Gang in 2 colours, but any worsted cotton or linen will be beautiful here and 2 colours are not absolutely required. The yarn quantity given is for one placemat. The pattern is completely demonstrated in the video for this pattern on the Loveapple Crafts youtube channel.
Enjoy!!
Please note you can easily make a circle instead of the oval for a simpler project - just repeat the instructions for the first wedge and lie flat periodically to check how many wedges are required for a full circle (I find 11 wedges creates a circle that lies flat but this might vary with yarn/gauge).
