turner socks
Coming Soon: This pattern will be released on 23/12/2024
Difficulty: Intermediate
Design: The Turner Socks are two-tone colourwork socks, featuring a variety of geometric motifs. A faux seam is incorporated into the design in order to disguise the jog that is created by knitting colourwork in the round. This seam is placed along the center back of the leg and the underside of the foot, referencing the back seam in traditional nylon stockings. The cuff is knit in 2×2 rib.
About the pattern: This pattern is written for intermediate knitters and some prior experience with knitting colourwork is recommended, as the socks’ small circumference can make it difficult to maintain tension if you’re are unfamiliar with carrying floats. You do not need to have previously knit socks, however, and there are video tutorials showing you how to place and work the heel. You will need to be able to read colourwork charts (an explanation for how to do so is included in the pattern).
Construction: The socks are knit cuff-down, and use the forethought heel method. First, stitches are cast on and joined in the round. The cuff is then knit in 2x2 rib. Next, the leg’s colourwork chart is knit, before scrap yarn is used to place the forethought heel. Subsequently, the foot’s colourwork chart is knit and then the toe. There are two toe shaping options: the first is a classic wedge toe which is worked the same across both socks, and the second is a left and right toe which differs for each sock. Finally, stitches are picked up around the heel placement, and the heel is knit in the round.
Sizing: The Court Socks come in six sizes, to fit teens through to adults. The finished foot circumferences range from 14.5 – 26 cm / 5 3/4” – 10 1/4”. They are designed to be worn with 1.25 cm / 1/2”of negative ease.
Yarn: The recommended yarn for the Turner Socks is West Yorkshire Spinners’ Signature 4-ply (400 m / 437 yds per 100g). However, any standard fingering-weight sock yarn can be used.
The sample uses West Yorkshire Spinners’ Signature 4-ply in the shade Pennyroyal for the MC, and the shade Marshmallow as the CC.
You will need approximately 126, 160, 194 (228, 262, 297) m / 138, 175, 212 (249, 286, 325) yds of your MC, and 84, 88, 92 (97, 101, 105) m / 92, 96, 100 (106, 110, 114) yds of your CC.
Gauge: 35 stitches x 44 rows per 10 cm / 4” in the socks’ colourwork pattern.
Techniques: This pattern uses the German Twisted Cast On, Knit 2 Togethers, and Slip, Slip Knits.
