Twelve days of Christmas on the seashore
Hello, welcome to the description of a cozy dress called The Twelve Days of Christmas on the Seashore. Here you will find the list of necessary tools and materials, the step-by-step description of the process with photos, and some schemes. Also, the tips are added here and there to help to adjust, decorate, or develop this model.
PLEASE NOTE:
Due to a very fitted silhouette of this model, the description includes the number of stitches to start a skirt hem (590) and no final number of stitches for every size, so you will need to make some calculations for your waist circumference and further, this is put in the description (with number of stitches and cm for this particular variation that you see on the photos). The description gives numbers of cm to knit in this or that place, the number of stitches to cast in the beginning, the number of stitches/cm to make increases and decreases, the principles of decreases, the key points where to stop and to start according to bodily measurementsFor the dress on the photos (size S/M EU) with 3/4 sleeves and the length of the skirt 80cm (total length 122cm), I used 900g of Shetland wool that is 20 stitches and 22 rows in 10 х 10 cm on 4mm(No6 US) in stockinette stitch after washing. (this bobbin wool is DK weight initially, 283gr/100m, but increases in volume when washed and, thus, behaves as worsted). I am 5,67 feet/173cm tall with 110 pounds weight, so you can see the approximate proportions.
You can use yarn in worsted weight or everything that matches the gauge (folded thinner yarns, DKs that increase in volume after washing etc). Please note that yardage depends on the type of the fiber and you style of knitting in stockinette stitch. If you are not sure, please pm me.
Important: Always knit a sample to calculate stitches further, and the final length of the dress and yardage depend on the adjustments you’ll make during the knitting, so read the description carefully.
The whole dress knits in stockinette, only 2 rows of purls for a hem and some purls for the sleeves’ elastic.
Since the skirt of this dress is quite voluminous and goes in folds, it won’t stretch in the bottom area when you sit, and you won’t need an underskirt. Also, underarm gussets make this dress similar to historical/folk garments in which you can move and raise your arms freely without the whole construction crawling up :)
This will become a very cozy everyday working dress, or you can turn it into a magnificent gown adding length and decorations.
Tools:
- 4mm/N6 US circular needles
- 4mm/N6 US sock needles for sleeves
- knitting hook 2.5-3mm
- knitting markers, row counters if you use them
- a sewing needle/tapestry needle
- a measure-tape
- scissors
Techniques:
- all the stitches, if not specified otherwise, are stockinette stitch
- increases, decreases
- darts
- casting/raising stitches from a knitted cloth
- casting/raising stitches with a crochet hook, any crochet stitches
- knitting seam for shoulders (not strictly necessary), mattress seam
- closing stitches
- closing elastic with a needle (not strictly necessary) All the techniques are widely described on Youtube and other places, you can use your favorite methods here for each.
Level: intermediate, since some calculations are needed
Time: depends on your knitting speed, but overall this is a pretty quick project due to simple techniques and the type of yarn
I hope you found this description comfortable and your new dress cozy.
