When summer turns to autumn, it’s time to pull out the cool season clothes and handknits. While I don’t always have time to knit a new sweater for the season, I can almost always make room for a new cowl – something in whatever color strikes my fancy at the moment

This quick-knit cowl is a great weekend project when you just want something fun on your needles (or something new to wear). The classic size and slightly barreled shape sit beautifully around the neck for moments when you need a little extra warmth. The mohair creates a lovely transition between the basket weave and lace, and the chart is simple enough that you can memorize it after just a couple of repeats.

CONSTRUCTION

This cowl is knit in the round, with basket weave edges and branch-inspired lace details that run in parallel columns up the body of the cowl. The lace section is enhanced with a second strand of silk mohair knit together with the MC to create the “twilight” effect. The opposite edge is finished with matching basket weave trim.

Lace Weight Silk Mohair | 262 yards in 20 grams (you will use most of the skein, but not all)

US Size 6 (4 mm) 16 in (40 cm) circular needles

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

A) Circumference: 26 in (65 cm)
B) Length (top to bottom): 11 in (27.5 cm)

Measurements are post-blocking with superwash wool.
