This hat is made in the Swedish Twined Knitting technique, and the pattern assumes the reader has not practiced this method before. A two-color cast-on creates a lovely edge, then the brim is worked in two ends of the same ball of yarn, creating a textured pattern. The upper part of the hat features motifs that appear to be snowflakes; then a two-color Herringbone Braid is knitted. The crown is then decreased.

There are photos and directions to explain how to manage the ball of yarn, how to cast on, to twine knit and purl, to make basic units of design, such as the crook stitch, the “O” stitch, Chain Path, the Herringbone Braid, and more.

The hat requires more than one skein, but less than two for the main color, and a few yards of a contrasting color for the cast-on and the braid. Twined knitting often gives a tighter gauge, so note your swatch gauge before and after blocking.

This hat is also available as a kit and in five colors (blue, red, mustard (shown), brick, and green).
