This scarf is knit in two-color Brioche stitch, which combines slipped stitches and yarn overs for a thick and stretchy fabric. When working the brioche stitch, at all times half of the stitches on the needle will be accompanied by a yarn over of the contrasting color. Whenever you are directed to knit or purl two stitches together, you will always be working a stitch together with its accompanying yarn over. When counting stitches, count the stitch and and the yarn over as 1 stitch. If counted in this way, you will always have 18 stitches on the needle while knitting this scarf. This will be particularly important when working the cables.
