Twisted Stitch Mitts
This pair of Twisted Stitch Mitts has a pattern of traveling twisted stitches on the back of the hand and a smooth stockinette palm. The patterned thumb rises out of a gusset and the twisted stitch ribbing flows nicely into the columns of twisted stitches on the back of the hand. Small Chain #2 and Pieced Chain with Plum Pit patterns in Maria Erlbacher’s book, Twisted-Stitch Knitting, were the inspiration for these mitts.

The pattern, written for one size, fits an average woman’s hand of 7.5 inches ( 19 cm) in circumference. The size can be adjusted by changing the needle size. The length of the hand can be adjusted by adding to or shortening the ribbing near the fingers. The length of the thumb can be made longer by adding to the tip of the thumb ribbing or the twisted pattern. It can be shortened by taking out part of the thumb pattern or eliminating the ribbing. Specific directions are given in the pattern. Because these twisted stitches form a knit purl pattern similar to ribbing, the back of the hand or the thumb will not roll without final ribbing. However, the palm is stockinette and it would roll without ribbing.
The gauge in stockinette is 34 stitches and 38 rows in 4 inches of stockinette. In the twisted pattern, the gauge is 57 stitches and 46 rows in 4 inches.
Your preferred method of small diameter knitting can be used to knit the seamless mitts - DPNs, magic loop, or 2 circulars.
The finished weight of the sample mitts is 48g so it should be possible to get 2 pair out of a 100g skein of sock yarn.
