After a super inspiring lecture at Sock Summit 2011 by Gladys We and Karla Stuebing I became quite enamored with the idea of planned pooling (the PDF from their lecture is available here if you, too, want a little inspiration! )

As a hand dyer I’m always looking for interesting ways to showcase variegated yarns to their best effect. My method is a bit more freeform than Karla & Gladys’, allows for more “wobble” and takes advantage of the middle mixtures in between colors, which is where I find the beauty in hand dyed yarn. I think allowing the colors their natural wavering gives a look that resembles ikat. Simple to knit with a teensy bit of creative finishing this would be a great project to bring to knit night and work on while chatting away. The finishing touches give the cowl a lot of body and shows both sides while worn. These are quite addictive to knit as once you get it set up it is like a watercolor appearing row by row…
