This pattern came about as a complete accident. I started doing some slip stitches thinking it would give a nice texture, turned the piece over and realised that the stripes of yarn were horizontal on the front and vertical on the back. I then could see that you could knit this as a straight forward scarf or start a bit differently and create either a double or single cowl. To really make the colours stand out you’ll need two contrasting colours. I made mine with ripped back 4ply wool held double for the dark and light colour but you can use an Aran weight yarn held singularly.

Measurements
For the scarf and double cowl – 16cm / 6.25 inches wide by 120cm / 48 inches long/round
For a single cowl – 16cm / 6.25 inches wide by 61cm / 24 inches round

Difficulty
This can be made holding two 4 ply yarns together or an Aran weight. Knit and purl stitches are used throughout together with holding the yarn in front or behind when slipping a stitch, as instructed.

Tension
4ply - 28 sts and 34 rows over 10cm / 4 inch square in pattern; Aran – 25 sts and 34 rows over 10cm / 4 inch square in pattern
