“Uitwaaien” /ˈœy̯t.ʋaːi̯.ə(n)/ in Dutch means “to walk in the wind”, “to let the wind clear your mind”, or simply “to get some fresh air”. This applies especially for wintertime when the winds on the North Sea coast and the Dutch dikes are so strong that you could let yourself be carried away by them.
These are precisely the conditions this cowl is designed for: It is a soft, wind resistant, solid, and easy-to-wear cowl. Like a dike, it nestles up to your neck and protects you from all the storms. It’s a simple and fast project, suitable even for beginners.

Finished size: The pattern is written for two sizes 1 2. Size 1 is narrower and smaller, but the knitted fabric itself features more thickness and steadiness. This size is best suited for those who like to have a very warm and snugly protection against the wind and cold. Size 2 is wider, and the fabric is slightly thinner. This alternative sits well on those who prefer loose-fitting scarfs and collars.
The thinner texture and the extended width of the size 2 are obtained by working the cowl with bigger needles.

Yarn: Ca. 200g of Winterrain Handspun Yarn, 100% Merino wool, with 120 ±10 m in 100g skein, which gives an estimated yardage of ca. 240 m (263 yds). Or any similar yarn to match the gauge.

Gauge: Size 1: 16 sts & 15 rows/rounds in 10 cm//4 in measured over herringbone stitch worked flat after blocking on 9.00 mm//US 13 needle.
Size 2: 14 sts & 14 rows/rounds in 10 cm//4 in measured over herringbone stitch worked flat after blocking on 10.00m//US 15 needle.

Materials needed: A circular needle in size 9.00 mm//US 13 10.00 mm//US 15 with an 80-100 cm cable; a needle in size 6.00 mm//US 10 (a circular needle, a double pointed needle, or a single interchangeable needle if you use the system of these needles) to bind off; a tapestry needle to seam the garment; Optional: fleece farbic for inner lining, sewing needle, sewing thread and some regular or safety pins for sewing in the lining.
