Umbriel is an extremely versatile hat that will suit any age, gender and style. It uses a deceptively simple ribbing pattern, to give a lovely texture. Its interesting shaping allows it to lie flat while giving a great fit.

The beauty of Umbriel lies in its versatility: it will adapt to your chosen gauge and yarn, not the other way around! With 24 size/gauge combinations to choose from, Umbriel can be made to fit babies and adults alike. For each size, you can also choose a range of yarn weights: go for a lighter yarn to create a refined hat, or choose a heavier yarn for a warmer, more robust look.

Sizing
Umbriel can be made to fit newborns (35cm head circumference), babies (40cm), toddlers (45cm) children (50cm), small adults (55cm) and large adults (60cm). It is designed with a gentle negative ease, so will fit snugly but comfortably.
Umbriel scales proportionally, so if you prefer a snugger or looser fit, simply adjust your gauge ever so slightly.

Yarn
Umbriel was originally designed for a DK weight yarn. However, it will work with a wide range of yarn weights, from sports to aran.

Needles
You will need 2 (sets of) needles: a smaller size for the cuff and a larger size for the body of the hat. If knitting with circulars, you may also want a set of DPNs in the larger size for the very top of the hat. The pattern recommends that the cuff ribbing is done on needles at least 1-1.5mm smaller than the body, to prevent it stretching out too much.

Gauge
The pattern can accommodate gauges between 14 x 22 and 22 x 34. Simply knit a swatch with your chosen yarn, and check your gauge against the table provided in the pattern to see how many stitches to cast on.
(please note that not all sizes are available at the highest and lowest gauges, e.g. there are no instructions for a newborn hat at gauge 14 x 22)

Extras
You will also need a cable needle, stitch markers and a tapestry needle. A pom pom is optional.

Example hat
The blue example hat is made in the baby size, with DK weight yarn (100% cashmere from Colourmart) giving a gauge of 18 x 28. It was knitted on size 3.5mm and 4.5mm circulars.
