This pattern is inspired by the now-iconic mittens Bernie Sanders wore to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s inauguration on January 20th, 2021. They were gifted to him a few years ago by Jen Ellis, a teacher in Vermont (@vtawesomeness on Twitter).

Updated pattern now includes:

  • Three sizes (achieved by changing needle sizes)
  • Instructions for both afterthought AND gusset thumb
  • Drastically improved charts

Bernie’s Inauguration Day statement mitts were cut from upcycled sweaters, this obviously won’t be an exact match but it’s pretty darn close. If you look closely at the MC section above the first chevrons you can see some decreases, I believe the fabric for these was cut from the yoke of a sweater. The original mittens also have a contrasting pattern on the reverse with an all-black palm. I have chosen to repeat the brown pattern all around for simplicity. This pattern is currently being tested, if you have any notes or questions, let me know!
