This little triangular kerchief is worked from tip to tip: you begin at one point, increase along one side until you reach the full width, then decrease your way back down to the other tip. The rhythm is easy to settle into, and the cable pattern (the same 4/4 right cross cable used throughout the Under Story Cardigan) repeats in a way that quickly becomes familiar in your hands.

If you’re new to cables, this is an excellent place to start. The scarf is small enough to feel manageable, but makes you confident in knitting the cabled pattern before committing to a larger project. And if cables already feel like second nature, it’s a lovely quick knit that uses up oddments of yarn beautifully: leftovers from the cardigan, or any fingering + mohair combination sitting in your stash waiting for the right moment.

The size is easy to adjust: simply work more pattern repeats before beginning the decreases for a wider, more generous shawl (or less for a smaller scarf).

Please note that the instructions are at points charted without written out instructions.

Yarn
Note: The shawl uses a strand of fingering weight yarn held together with a strand of lace weight yarn, but they can be substituted for a single strand of DK weight yarn. If you wish to work a DK weight version, omit all the instructions where it says “hold the yarns together” and follow only the yarn amount requirements for the fingering weight yarn.
