This is a patio or conservatory cushion (or pillow) cover in garter stitch and stockinet, decorated with a knitted lily and closed with three buttons and loops. Apart from a few ribbons it is made entirely from a scrap ball (or scrap skein) consisting of leftover yarns which are cut and made into a single length with Russian joins. There are four optional edgings: knitted piping, a tassel fringe and two crocheted trims. A separate pattern is included for the cobweb ruffle lily.

Requirements:

  • Yarn: Approx 350g of any DK or 8 ply yarn for cushion cover, crocheted edging or piping, and flower. (Extra yarn required for optional tassel edging).
  • Needles: Circular needle or pair of long straight needles, metric: size 4mm, US size 6, UK/Canada size 8
  • Sewing thread and needle.
  • Cushion/pillow pad: size 16in (40cm) square.
  • Buttons: Three odd buttons, approx 1in (2.5cm) dia.
  • Crochet hook: metric size 4mm, US size 6, UK/Canada size 8. This is for button loops, and for optional crochet edgings.
  • For optional tassel edging: Rug hook or large crochet hook; extra yarn.
  • For optional piping edging: Circular needle or two dpns, size 4mm as above.
  • For cobweb ruffle lily: 5.5ft (165cm) narrow ribbon

This pattern works with whatever gauge is recommended for your particular yarn. It could be adapted by an experienced knitter for any thickness of yarn using needles as recommended on the ball band.

The cushion/pillow can be made in a single colour or striped with any number of colours.

To create an artwork: If you use whatever combination of colours comes to hand, in a random manner, you may surprise yourself with unusual and unexpected effects - especially if you are brave enough to allow yourself new colour combinations which you do not expect to like.

Conventional version: Go out and purchase a classic set of co-ordinated colours, or forget the scrap ball preparation and use space-dyed yarn.

This is a full, written pattern, including directions for making the scrap ball.
