The Urchins and Scallops shawl mixes relaxing sections of stockinette with occasional stripes of the fun Sea Urchin stitch, with a scalloped border for an elegant finish. Using DK-weight yarn, it knits up fast and cozy.

Starting with just a few stitches, as the shawl grows the pattern provides multiple opportunities to skip to the scalloped border for a smaller shawl, or keep on going for those of you who love a bigger shawl. Yarn requirement will vary accordingly.

An advanced beginner/early intermediate will be comfortable knitting this shawl. There is a photo tutorial as well as a video to demonstrate the Sea Urchin stitch.

Size: Approximately 66”/165 cm along the long edge and 42”/105 cm along the short edges, with a 26”/65 cm drop from the long edge to the point, after not-very-aggressive blocking. There are specific instructions within the pattern to make a larger or smaller shawl if you prefer.

Yarn: DK-weight yarn, two 100-gram skeins of color 1 and one 100-gram skein color 2. The sample was worked with Murky Depths Dyeworks Neptune DK, a 100% wool yarn with 231 yds/211 meters to 100 grams. The sample colors are two skeins of “Cornbread and Cranberry” and one skein of “Picante.”
If you are pairing a solid/tonal with a variegated yarn, you will probably be more pleased if you use the variegated for the plainer sections (C1 in the pattern) and the solid/tonal for the Sea Urchin lace and scalloped border (C2).

Needles: US 8/5.0 mm or size needed to achieve gauge of 20 sts and 26 rows to 4”/10 cm. The shawl is worked flat.
