“Utkiek” (outlook, if you translate it literally) is Northern German dialect for a place from where you have a good view. In Bremen-Vegesack, the town where I was born, it is the name of a lively corner where the small river “Lesum” runs into the main river “Weser” and the old Vegesack harbour from the 17th century is located, too. https://vegesack.de/tourismus/maritime-meile/utkiek/

The cardigan is worked top-down, with a saddle shoulder and a gentle A-line shape.

It is perfect for using up leftovers of different colors of the same (or similar) yarn(s). After the upper body is finished, you can adjust the stripes to your own preferences and easily make them smaller in case you run out of that particular color. To prevent boredom, every color has its own stitch pattern (overall, it’s six of them), but all six are simple knit/ purl combinations or slip stitch patterns suitable for TV knitting.

Yarn & gauge
Needles: You will need 3,5mm and 3,75mm needles, depending on the stitch pattern.
Gauge: Gauge 24 sts x 35 rows in Moss Stitch with needle 3,5mm (24 sts x 44-48 rows in 3+1 and other slip stitch/ Garter-like patterns).

Approx. 1700/ 1850/ 2000/ 2150/ 2300 m of a Fingering weight yarn needed (for cardigan length of approx. 80cm): 600-800m for the main color MC and approx. 150-200m contrast color CC per stripe.

For my first sample (in size L), I have used De Rerum Ulysse (100% wool, 185m/ 50g) in colors “Poivre Blanc“ (MC), “Sauge”, “Plume”, “Genet”, “Lagon“ and “Poivre at sel”.

Ruppert Garne Soft Lamb (100% wool, 425m/ 50g) with 2 strands held together would also be a good choice.

Choose your size based on your shoulder width.
(For additional bust width, you could start the body increases earlier in stripe 3 and/ or cast on more underarm sts.)

Worked at a gauge of 2 sts more/ less on 10cm, the cardigan
will get approx. one size smaller/ bigger.
