Vancouver Story Sweater
This pattern makes a sweater approximately 20” across chest and back and 29” from top of neck to hem at back. You can make the sweater “smaller or shorter” by omitting or adding a “panel” or by using a lighter weight yarn and smaller needles. The sleeve length is about 24” from sleeve seam to hem. If too long….roll them up or omit a “panel”…..if not long enough, add another “panel”. The gauge of 23 st. and 25 rows to 4” (10 cm.) is easily adaptable to the pattern “panels” to make larger or smaller.
You’ll need about 6 skeins of the main colour and various small amounts of secondary colours. The pattern tells you what colours I chose but you can adjust your colours easily. The body of the sweater is a simple rectangle with the only changes being at the neckline and simple ones at the shoulders.
This “Vancouver Story Sweater” was my entry into a Kaffe Fassett competition at the Canadian Craft Museum in the early 1990s. This sweater and pattern were recently featured in a Vancouver Art Gallery case, for over a year, at the Vancouver International Airport. I had a great deal of interest from knitters from around the globe but could not reproduce the pattern while it was out of my hands.
The pattern original is an oversized “cut and paste”, early computer generated piece. It is hand drawn on blue grid and resembles an architectural drawing. Part of the pattern’s appeal is its naivete in its “handmade-ness” and I have had it reproduced, managing to keep the charm of the original. It would be best to print the pattern as intended, 34” x 22”, an architectural drawing size.
I really hope you have fun with it.
