Vera Rubin (b. 1928) is an astronomer who uncovered a phenomenon known as the “galaxy rotation problem”—a discrepancy between the predicted and observed motion of
galaxies. Her observations showed that the rotation of galaxies didn’t match the perceived amount of matter in a galaxy—stars, planets, dust—and supported the theory
of what we now call “dark matter.” To show her findings, Vera drew galaxy rotation curves, which inspires the “orbit ridge”
stitch pattern and the circular, top-down design of this sweater.
