Head of Gryffindor house and a no-nonsense professor of Transfiguration, Minerva McGonagall may seem stern, but she cares deeply for her students. Actress Dame Maggie Smith and costume designer Judianna Makovsky took inspiration for McGonagall’s costumes from her name, bringing her Scottish heritage to the forefront. Usually dressed in green, she sports a wizard version of a deerstalker hat when outdoors and a hat inspired by a traditional Scottish tam when indoors. Her emerald-green velvet robes are covered in Celtic cable motifs topped with a Celtic knot brooch, textured fabric with pleats, and long, pointed sleeves.

Inspired by the robes McGonagall wears during a Transfiguration lesson in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, this stunning cape is constructed in two identical half-pi shawls that are seamed together along half of the top edges, creating a spine. Trellis, diamond, and ring cables are worked on a background of reverse stockinette, creating an elaborate texture reminiscent of Professor McGonagall’s brooch and Celtic knot robes. The neckline and pointed sleeves are formed as the pieces are joined, transfiguring this one-size-fits-all piece into a cape!
