It’s advent season!!

This pattern was designed using an advent box from Sewrella Yarn from a few years ago. I wanted a stitch pattern that would showcase both tonals and variegated yarns, something that was simple enough to do while watching your favorite Vlogmas videos or Christmas movies, and something that’s quick enough to do each day so you can keep up with your daily yarn openings. You should be able to complete each color section in about 30-45 minutes, including weaving in ends. I recommend weaving in your 2 tails at the beginning of the day’s section and leaving your ending tail from that day’s colors so you can easily add tomorrow’s color.

While it is designed with 24 mini skein advent boxes in mind, it’s SO versatile. You’re going to use about 8g of colors 2-24, and about 9g of color 1, 193g total.

  • If you have 12 20g mini skeins, you can either work 2 consecutive repeats of each color or work through colors 1-12 and then repeat colors 1-12 again.
  • If you have 24 mini skeins and an additional full 100g skein, you can incorporate all 5 colors - your finished item will just be about 2.5 inches longer than the finished size listed in the pattern.
  • 50g half skeins - I have a bunch of these in my stash, and if you’ve got 4 that you want to put together, you could stripe them up in a 4-stripe repeat.
  • 100g full skeins - Grab 2 coordinating full skeins and you could work this up in a 2-stripe repeat
  • Mix and match - Grab a 100g main color skein and 12 mini skeins and alternate between the main color and a mini skein until you have 24 pattern repeats.
  • Make it scrappy! We all have leftovers from projects lying around that we don’t know what to do with or we don’t want to commit to putting them in a blanket like a lot of people do. Grab 24 scraps that are at least 8g and put together a scrappy cowl.

I know we’re not exactly in yarn crawl/fiber festival season, but keep this pattern in mind! You could get a mini skein at each store or vendor you visit at your favorite yarn crawl or fiber festival and put them together in this cowl.
