The cuff of this ethnographic mitten from Vidzeme, Vidzeme begins with two rows of Latvian fringes followed by a series of knit/purl rows (in garter stitch) which is a cuff detail that dates to the 18th Century. Above the cuff is a wide overwork band that uses colors that replicate the colors used in the fringes. The balance of the mitten is knit in two colors.

At 104 stitches and when knit at 10 spi, this handsome mitten will fit a man’s hand. Changes in needle size or yarn will change the gauge: check your gauge in pattern before casting on.

Vidzeme sits northeast of Riga.
