I wanted as much versatility as possible for my Viking hat, and I could imagine situations where having long hanging braids wouldn’t be suitable, but other times where you would want a very authentic look. So I designed a tab to use with Velcro in my hat so the braids (and beard) could be removable. One advantage I didn’t anticipate is that the braids can be stuck to the beard as well, making the look very interchangeable and fun.

Size: Approximately 2.5 x 2.25 inches (6.4 x 5.7 cm)
Gauge: 4 stitches/7 rows = 1” (10cm) in moss stitch. Correct gauge is not essential for this project.

Materials
5g of aran weight acrylic/wool blend yarn (approx 10 yards), or yarn of your choice. The tab is meant to match with the ‘hair’ of the braid, so use whatever yarn you are using for the braid and the tab will match.
Additional 15g (approx 30 yards) of the same yarn to make the braid
Pair of 4.5mm (UK 7/US 7) straight knitting needles (or sized for your yarn)
Knitter’s/tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Velcro squares (cut to fit on your tab)
Thread and sharp needle to sew Velcro on, if your Velcro is not self-adhesive
