One of my favourite things to use in knitting is Vikkel braids! Also known as the Estonian or lateral braid. I’m also a sucker for a low-fitting hat that covers my ears completely and is right down to my eyebrows. However, many of my friends prefer a slouchy fit. Through trial and error, I’ve come up with this pattern to be a versatile work-around! Pull it down to your eyebrows for those cold winter days, or push it up to your hairline to work as a slouchy hat on warmer days. This pattern also comfortably fits children and even toddlers with the brim folded up. This pattern uses the German Twisted cast on as well as the Vikkel Braid- the pattern includes a written description of how to do a Vikkel Braid, as well as links to tutorials that I’ve filmed on how to do both.

The Vikkel Braid Toque is a super bulky/chunky hat pattern that’s perfect for any skill level of knitting. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced knitter, it’s a quick knit and a ton of fun!

This includes 2 different patterns. Both patterns use an approximate 71 yards of yarn. They also measure approximately 16” circumference unstretched.

Pattern A:
10mm (US 15) 24” circular needles
12mm (US 17) 24” circular needles
Gauge: 5 stitches x 8 rows = 2”x2”

Pattern B:
8mm (US 11) 24” circular needles
10mm (US 17) 24” circular needles
5.5 stitches x 9 rows = 2”x2”

Personally, I don’t use gauge checks on hats- I took these from unblocked and unstretched finished hats. It’s not of utmost importance to use a gauge for this hat, in my opinion, but you’re welcome to do so!
