The graceful lace and undulating cables of the Vitastjerna scarf and cowl are an elegant addition to fall and winter wardrobes.

The sample scarf was worked in fingering weight yarn; it would also look good in DK weight. Instructions to change the length of the scarf are given in the pattern.

The cowl knits up quickly in DK yarn; it would also look good in fingering weight. Due to the large number of rows in the pattern repeat, the height of the cowl cannot be easily adjusted. However, instructions to change the circumference are given in the pattern.

The motifs are charted only. Both patterns have been testknitted.

This cowl and scarf are part of my series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. The samples are both knitted in yarns that contain wool from Gotland sheep.

The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.

Vitastjerna was the wife of Tjelvar, who is said to be the first person to bring fire to the island of Gotland in Sweden.
