Traditional Norwegian mittens with a touch of Art Nouveau whimsy!

Size: These are Women’s Small/Medium, as worked in Sport Weight yarn. A bigger size may be made by using thicker yarn/bigger needles.

Difficulty: These are a small but kind of intense project, as only the pattern on the palm is easily memorized. They are good for a third or fourth colorwork project. I recommend being familiar with mitten construction before knitting these, but they are within reach for an adventurous knitter!

Skills needed: Cast on, knitting in the round on DPNs, increasing, decreasing.

Yarn: 1 skein Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight in Boysenberry-184 yds per skein, 1 skein Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight in Bamboo--184 yds per skein, or other sport weight yarn.

Gauge: 6 st per inch in the round on size 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles

Needles: Size 5 double pointed needles or circular equivalent if you prefer Magic Loop. Shorter size 5 double pointed needles for thumb if desired.

Notions: Magnetic board or post its to keep track of your place in the chart. Scrap yarn or stitch holder for thumb. Stitch markers as desired.

Order of work: You will first cast a decorative edge or work a hem to be folded under. You will knit the cuff, then the body of the mitten, increasing to create the thumb gusset. The thumb stitches are then put on a holder while you knit the rest of the mitten and then you will go back and knit the rest of the thumb.

Note on Latvian Braid cast on: Latvian Braid is extremely hard to convey in words but I still wanted to include it as a pattern option. I’ve created a blog post at http://sweetbriarfiberarts.typepad.com/blog/2018/02/knitt.... Here you will find links to both the picture tutorial and video I found the most helpful.
