As I love to play with numbers, this pattern follows a simple numerical sequence symmetrical to the shawl centre.
While the knitting proceeds with natural rhythm, row by row a growing alternation of lace holes starts to decorate the shawl up to the lace section inspired by wild inflorescences similar to japanese umbrellas.
Hence its name Wagasa.
As Natalya, one of my testers, wrote me: “I got the connection between knitting and math… It’s so logical! I love this kind of patterns.”
This is exactly what I had in mind and I couldn’t explain it better!!! ♥

MATERIALS
Yarn
2 hanks of Mé-mé 20 by Rosa Pomar (100% Portuguese wool), light fingering, 334m/364yds per 100g skein.
Colour: 4 (cinnamon or rust).
This yarn is usually sold in hanks of 50g but when I visited Retrosaria I found these 100g per skein.
I’m very satisfied with this rustic woolen spun yarn and the color I’ve chosen, warm and bright at the same time!
While knitting it I had the same sensation as crumbling dried leaves in my hands.
Of course it can be also made with other different yarn but in this case yardage and dimensions might change.
Needles
100 cm 3.5 mm/40” US 4 circular needle
or use the needle size you need to achieve gauge.
Other Notions
Stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking aids, tape measure.

GAUGE
18 sts by 32 rows in 10 cm/4” in stockinette after blocking it with pins.

FINISHED MEASUREAMENTS
220cm/86,6” wide and 67 cm/26,4” deep at the deepest point.

NOTES
Techniques include: garter tab cast on, stockinette, increases, decreases, yarn over.
