Walter The Giant Elephant
Difficulty level: advanced beginner, although a beginner with basic skills would be able to complete by following the detailed instructional pictures.
The finished size is approx. 50 cm/ 19.5 inches from head to toes, and 30 cm/ 12 inches wide if using the materials stated in the pattern.
MATERIALS AND TOOLS
-#4 medium polyester yarn (I used two strands of Bernat Baby Velvet. You can easily replace with one strand of any baby blanket yarn in one strand):
-purple yarn 510m / 340g
-Light beige yarn for the soles and tusks 45m / 30g
-Sport acrylic yarn: White yarn for eyes (few feet)
-For the pupils I used a strand of black yarn. You can use large ready-made plastic safety eyes instead, although I do not recommend it, especially if the elephant is intended for a small child.
-Crochet hook – a 6 mm (10/O), or any other suitable hook size for the yarn you chose.
When making toys, you should use a smaller hook than recommended for the yarn you choose. Make sure you crochet tight enough; otherwise, the stuffing will show through the holes.
-Crochet hook – for the tusks a 3.5 mm (4/E), or any other suitable hook size for the yarn you chose.
-Crochet hook – for the eyes a 2 mm (if not available, use a “B” instead), or any other suitable hook size for the yarn you chose.
-Polyfill stuffing
-Tapestry needle for sewing
-Scissors
-Stitch marker - to keep track of the end of each round. Always move your stitch marker to the last stitch in the round. If you don’t have a stitch marker, you can always use a scrap of contrasting yarn instead.
