The Scalae Cowl pattern features channels of flowing lace and stockinette stitch working together to create structure and movement. The “leaning ladders” lace pattern created looks very much like the rustic ladders seen leaning against buildings in old town Santorini or Corfu (“Scalae” means “ladder” in Ancient Greek).

This cowl knits up quickly in Rylie by HiKoo® and is finished by grafting the short ends together. Grafting in lace can be intimidating, but this is a perfectly straightforward learning experience if you’ve never grafted lace before and a satisfying project for beginners and advanced knitters alike.
