From the political intrigue of Inanna to the bloodied battlefields of Anat, from the strategies of Athena to the vengeance of Sekhmet, the warrior goddess has played an important role in the earliest mythologies of the world. At a time when women are beset with challenges, both global and personal, taking up the mantle of the warrior goddess is a promise of hope and strength.
The Warrior Goddess MKAL shawl is an exploration of the strength and evolution of women warrior goddesses and the power they held over the ancient world. A bottom-up shawl that incorporates a center panel and Faroese shaping to hug the shoulders, this is a warm wrap for a cold season as women around the world gather their strength. Motifs are chosen to represent some aspect of each goddess, or of the parts of the world where they held sway.

Materials Needed:
- 4mm (US 6) needle suitable for flat knitting across many stitches or whatever size you need for gauge
- @785 yards sport weight yarn
- 30 stitch markers to mark motif repeats
- 4 different stitch markers to mark external and internal borders
- additional 65 yards of the same sport weight yarn for the practice swatch if you do not intend to reuse your swatch yarn
Gauge: 23 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in unblocked lace fabric
The completed practice swatch should measure roughly 7” across between garter borders and 7” in length between first and last garter ridges before blocking.
Measurements are given for the unblocked swatch because it is difficult to ensure every person blocks their swatch with equal vigor.
Note that I do not consider gauge to be essential for a shawl; you should instead swatch for a pleasing fabric. The swatch is included to practice the trickier parts of the pattern, and to give you a rough estimate of yardage. If, after you have achieved a fabric you like, your swatch measures significantly differently from the expected dimensions, you will need proportionately more or less yarn.
